Born in a small mining village in South Wales, famed for its portrayal in the novel/film "How Green Was My Valley". Joined the Royal Navy at 16 in 1970 and left in 1994. Became a referee a few years earlier whilst playing for HMS Drake.

After working for World Snooker for 2 years in the "Challenge Tour" events, was accepted as a full member of the Professional Referees Association, carried on working at the challenge tours and main tour summer qualifiers until the demise of the Challenge Tour events.
